Which NDE Method or Technique?
Eddy Current (ECT)
ECT, in most occasions, is the fastest way to detect abnormalities within thin wall tubular materials. Eddy Current lends itself useful in several non-ferromagnetic materials such as, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Copper Alloys, Titanium, Inconel, and many other alloys. In terms of defect detection within tubing, ECT can locate ID & OD pitting, ID & OD corrosion and erosion, and is limited to both axial and circumferential cracking.
Remote Field (RFT)
RFT is an efficient method to inspect ferromagnetic material within heat exchangers and boilers. Remote Field tends to be pulled at a slower speed than Eddy Current but is less sensitive to centering issues and additional variables. RFT is sensitive to both ID & OD defects such as, corrosion, erosion, fretting, and limited to small pitting.
Near Field (NFT)
NFT is a perfect solution for evaluating air cooler or fin fan tubes which contain external aluminum fins. The Near Field technique is limited to the ID of the tube wall which is not affected by supports or fins. NFT is a quick inspection to detect general ID corrosion & erosion and limited pit detection.
Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS)
IRIS is one of the most accurate and reliable measurement inspections for tube testing. IRIS is an ultrasound inspection which requires the tube to be filled with water. IRIS is capable of detecting ID & OD corrosion and erosion, fretting, and limited pitting. It is great to prove-up indications detected with electromagnetics. The speed in which IRIS is pulled is very slow compared to its counterparts.
Eddy Current Array (ECA)
ECA maintains the same principles as ECT however due to design and technology is superior to detection, sizing, analysis, and pull speed. ECA coils are arranged to encompass 360 degrees around the probe to detect defects of all dimensions, including axial and circumferential cracking. ECA probes can be custom made for various applications.
